Expat Package: Going Local

In the past, expatriate packages in Asia would typically include a wide range of benefits such as housing allowances, education reimbursement, tax equalisation and car allowances. However, as a result of the recent global economic downturn, many organisations have resorted to cost-cutting measures to reduce expenditures on excessive expatriate packages.

Interestingly, it is becoming increasingly common for foreign nationals, including the Asiapats or Asian returnees to accept local or so-called “local plus” packages for positions in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in destinations such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo. A recent survey by
a Singaporean consulting firm showed that almost 20% expatriates working in Singapore are now being paid on a local package. This figure has increased by nearly 15% since a year earlier.
